Is Your PC Restarting Randomly? It is Under Attack from Melissa Virus

Melissa viruses are macro viruses which can be spread fast by being dispersed as email attachments which on opening renders number of safeguards in Word 97 or Word 2000 inoperative. If you are using a Microsoft Outlook email program the virus will be resent to the first 50 people in your contact list. Though it doesn’t destroy the files in a system, it has the potential to put corporate and other mail servers out of action.

Melissa arrives as an attachment in an email with the subject ‘’ Important Message From <email address of the account from which of the account the virus was sent>’’. The sender is the actual email address from which the virus came as an email attachment. The attachment is usually named list.doc and contains a list of a number of pornographic websites.

Melissa infects the Normal. Dot template which is used in all Word documents by default. This allows the virus to infect as well as send documents with sensitive information, apart from the porn site list. You can spread these viruses without knowledge by sending your infected documents to others. Incase the document is opened or a new document is created, it will be infected. There are a number of variants of the Melissa virus. Some of them are mentioned below:-

  • Assilem- This is an entire sub-family of Melissa and has all capabilities of the original virus, barring the mass mailing capability. These can only infect other documents on being executed on a clean computer.
  • Melissa.BG( Also known as ‘’Resume’’)- It is a different family, Word97/Resume and arrives on an email with the following features:-
          Subject: Resume- Peter Martin
         Body: To: Director of Sales/Marketing

In the attachment below is my resume with a number of references mentioned in it. Please feel free to get in touch with me via my contact number or email if you have any queries about my experience. I am looking forward to your update.
